David Jones all started in 1838. David Jones vision was to sell the best everyday exclusive goods that embraces the everyday life.In between the 1838 David Jones eventually retired and left the management of the store to his business partners. Unfortunately, the store failed and the assets of David Jones were assigned to Trustees. He came back out of retirement, borrowed heavily, and with the help of new partners and his son Edward Lloyd, managed to recreate the store's success.

The second store opened in 1927 this store is now and remains the flagship of the company.To celebrate the 100th birthday of David Jones in 1938 another store was opened by the Prime Minister "Billy"Hughes though soon after this happened World War II began and the store was used for the Ministry of Munitions. Though World War II did not stop David Jones during this time trading was still on going.In 1947 Paris Dior Fashion was brought to Australia by David Jones and it brilliantly blew up and was the first time Australia got a taste of Paris Dior it was also brought to Australia and out of its country for the first time.In 1954 Queen Elizabeth II came to Australia for the first time and the first time for a British Monarch came to Australia and it was the seventh floor of the David Jones Elizabeth street was chosen for her majesty for a state banquet in her honour. Soon after through these couple years the company has grown from three stores to more than thirty.
